Rhaburn has been on the music scene for over 50 years. He has entertained us with his own brand of cultural music. The real godfather of the ‘brukdown’ punta music is in truth Lord Rhaburn as you can recall (“Bud Bank Wedding”, “Gumagarugu Water” and “Yo Born Deh”.)
Lord Rhaburn, Belize’s Calypso King, is the only Belizean Calypsonian that has made fame at home and abroad. He’s a very good composer, and on the stage he’s a versatile show man and a flamboyant dresser. Rhaburn has received many awards for his works. He’s has received an award from her majesty, the Queen, that award being the M.B.E.
In the world of Caribbean music, Rhaburn can stand tall because he’s recognized among the Calypsonians as the brother who can ‘do his thing’ well. He refuses to take from other composers’ tunes and say he has a song by simply changing the lyrics. When you hear Lord Rhaburn’s songs, be it calypso, soca, or brukdown punta music, you are listening to a new type of songs, with very unusual sounds.
His lyrics are also fun to listen and pay keen attention to. Some, if not all, his songs have a double entendre and as he says in one of his more famous tracks: “this is not a bad calypso, I’m singing about a pussy cat, and I mean nothing else but that”.
His music and legacy live on as a staple of Belizean cultural identity. His music remains in the forefront, and Belizeans, young and old, can attest to at least one song that they love. Older folks reminisce of the days when they would party the night away to their favorite tunes.
In December 2004, the first annual Lord Rhaburn Music Awards was held to a sold out audience at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts. The show was produced by Lord Rhaburn himself, in an effort to showcase and honor Belize’s best talents from both at home and from abroad. Awards were presented to great artists, past and present, for their contribution to music. Spectacular performances also rocked the auditorium and had the audience on their feet. Recipients included legendary greats like Anthony Richards, Percival Drummond, and Lucio Alcoser, “The Princess” Shirley Ferguson, The Queen of Brukdown Lela Vernon, dynamic duo Sam Hamilton and Zoila Clarke, and many other fabulous artists. He has hosted the show every year since then, and aims to continue his legacy through scouting up and coming talent.
In May 2005, Lord Rhaburn was inducted into the International Reggae and World Music Hall of Fame in New York City, U.S.A. This prestigious award gave him even more recognition and praise to add to his already renowned status.
Today, Lord Rhaburn is promoting music on the Belizean scene. Not only his own great works, but those of other accomplished Belizean musicians as well as the future stars of the jewel.
